Russell Plow's "The Christmas Meeting" is a sensitively composed and artfully paced opera in one short act for tenor and mezzo. The score has echoes of Britten's Curlew River with specks of Janacek-ian lushness, articulating the ethereal mystery Rosemary Timperley's story whilst holding our attention with sharp dramatic details. It is particularly encouraging to see a new piece that works on its own, but that can be easily imagined included in other operatic or concert programmes. I greatly look forward to hearing the piece again!
