Inspired by the events of March 2011, when refugees fleeing Africa were stranded in the sea and left to starve to death. The piece was written for the English National Opera Mini-opera competition, and is intended to be a soundtrack to a film (also made as part of the competition).
Using a cappella voices, the piece is more atmospheric than operatic, though at points the voices are quite direct. As much as the piece is serious and tragic, I tried to avoid being too 'emotional' or sentimental, as I was eager to leave some emotional space for the picture. This explains both the amount of silence in the piece, and the ambient noise of cars going past, which I hope give it a sense of objectivity. All said, I have really enjoyed experimenting with this piece.
